How do scammers obtain my email address?
- They receive lists of email addresses by legal or illegal means. Please know that your email address is not being given out by GPCU.
How do I end up at a fraudulent site in a phishing email?
- Con artists use techniques to make the link appear correct in the email, but the email then redirects you to a different Internet address. When in doubt, physically type in Golden Plains’ web site address, yourself, rather than clicking on a link in an email.
What if I responded to one of these emails?
- Contact us immediately at abuse@gpcu.org. Also, contact your local Golden Plains Credit Union location, and we will flag your account and watch for any unusual activity.
Should I be concerned about the security of using Golden Plains Online?
- No. You should not be concerned about the security of using Golden Plains Online. This type of fraud (phishing), is not related to Golden Plains Online or its security. This scam preys on the lack of knowledge of the Internet user.
What is Golden Plains Credit Union doing to protect me?
- We use the latest technology to provide security to protect our sensitive account information.
- Beginning in January 2007, we will be providing Multi-Factor Authentication, for Golden Plains' Online users. This will serve as an additional layer of security for online financial transactions.
- If a phishing incident does occur, we work very diligently and quickly to shut down the fraudulent web site. We also research the incident to prevent it from happening again.
- We inform our members, via our member newsletter and on our web site, what phishing is and how to prevent it.
- See ‘GPCU Safeguards.’
