Phishing attacks (Internet Scams) are becoming quite sophisticated and difficult to detect. Many people are getting tricked into giving up their personal financial information. If you have been tricked this way, you should assume you will become a victim of fraud. Below are some tips on how to avoid getting "hooked" on phishing scams:

  • Be suspicious of any email with urgent requests for personal information.
  • Don’t use the links in an email to get to any web page if you suspect the message might not be authentic.
  • Avoid filling out forms in email messages that ask for personal financial information.
  • Don't enter personal or financial information into pop-up windows.
  • If someone contacts you and says you have been a victim of fraud, verify the person's identity before you provide any information.
  • Regularly log into your online accounts and don’t wait for as long as a month before you check each account.
  • Regularly check your financial institution, credit and debit card statements to ensure that all transactions are legitimate.
  • Consider installing a web browser tool bar to help protect you from known phishing fraud web sites. Make sure you use a reputable company, such as Google or Yahoo.
  • Always ensure you’re using a secure web site when submitting credit card or other sensitive information via your Web browser.
  • Ensure that your browser is up to date and security patches applied.
  • Act immediately if you have been "hooked" by a phisher.  If you have provided account numbers, PINs (Personal Identification Numbers), or passwords to a phisher, notify the companies with whom you have the accounts.
  • Always report "phishing" or "fraudulent" emails to the following groups:

        * GPCU Infomation Systems' Department at
    abuse@gpcu.org
        * Internet Fraud Complaint Center (IFCC) at

        * The company that is being impersonated
